The election of six members to the Standing Committee was disrupted by BJP and AAP council members fighting in the meeting room of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Strange images taken inside the House showed female council members bumping and jostling one another. Others exchanged punches. Members of the BJP and AAP said that supporters of the other party threw apples, plastic bottles, and other objects at them.

A few BJP members claimed that some of their fellow party councillors got hit with objects flung in the air, while Mayor Shelly Oberoi alleged that some saffron party councillors tried to attack her. The House was adjourned repeatedly as pandemonium raged.

The councillors, who had been in the House since yesterday morning, curled up for a snooze in the chamber itself, and things calmed down in the early hours of Thursday. On the seats, some people were observed lying down. Everything was peaceful and calm for a time. WATCH:

Council members awoke as daylight broke, and the uproar started all over again. The House’s well was filled with ballot boxes. Members of the BJP also gathered in the House’s well and began shouting.

Mayor Shelly Oberoi halted proceedings for another hour while the uproar persisted. BJP councillors were vehemently protesting against her, so she was hauled out by a cordon of party members.

When the election to choose the six members of the MCD Standing Committee will successfully end is currently unknown.

In the mayoral election on Wednesday, Shelly Oberoi of the AAP triumphed against Rekha Gupta of the BJP by a margin of 34 votes.

After a brief recess, the House reconvened to choose the deputy mayor. Aaley Mohammed Iqbal of the AAP won the election by defeating Kamal Bagri Mayor Oberoi of the BJP.

The BJP claimed that during the secret voting, which took place after the election of standing committee members had begun, the councillors—who were permitted to carry their mobile phones into the chamber—were photographing the ballots. The BJP urged that the votes cast be disregarded and new elections be held because this is a violation of the secret ballot.

Lashing out at the BJP, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj claimed the party was deliberately stalling election proceedings. “Despite the Supreme Court’s order, BJP is still creating ruckus and not allowing elections to take place, but the House will continue to function until the election process is over,” he tweeted.
