Silksong’s release has been postponed because of “It’s Gotten Quite Big”

The eagerly anticipated Hollow Knight: Silksong has been delayed (via Team Cherry), missing its anticipated release window of June 2022 to June 2023 as revealed in the most recent Xbox showcase. Fans will now likely have to wait a little longer to get their hands on the game, as a new release date has not yet been announced.

By presenting titles that were anticipated to be released shortly (as in, not much later than when the showcase aired), Xbox made a daring show of transparency last June. Xbox likely did this in order to prevent the anticipation from waning by making fans wait any longer than absolutely necessary, which is why it limited the announcements (and the stated release dates) to a 12-month timeframe and no longer.

A number of titles, including The Callisto Protocol, High On Life, Atomic Heart, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Pentiment, and others, were revealed by Xbox during the show. As usual, Game Pass allowed users to get these titles as soon as they became available. However, some Xbox games have failed to achieve their intended and deliberate aims, despite the company’s best efforts.

For instance, Ark 2 has been postponed until 2024 Starfield is now scheduled for a September release, so that it may be polished to absolute perfection. Since there wasn’t much marketing hype prior to June, it’s not shocking that Hollow Knight: Silksong appears to be joining the list of games that have been delayed.

Sadly, according to Matthew Gryphon, Team Cherry’s PR representative, this is not the case, which allayed our fears that the game was mired in development hell. As he says, the game has gotten “quite big,” which may be why it’s taking longer to release, suggesting that it may have grown past its planned boundaries.

We (or I) are left wondering what the word “big” could possibly mean because it is certainly not a little word. When I consider how it differs from its predecessor, I remember how some devoted players have attempted to calculate the size of Hollow Knight’s Hallownest in feet (and Flukemarms), completing intricate calculations that are beyond the scope of the average Metroidvania fan.

To get an idea of the breadth of the map, one fan even went so far as to spend an entire month taking screenshots of a single place in the game. The aforementioned fan, whose Reddit account has since been removed, calculated that Silk Song might be at least two buildings in size and possibly as big as the Congress Building based on the scale of the map, which is enormous! Although recent games like Afterimage have raised the bar for size, it appears that Silk Song is on the verge of setting a completely new benchmark for Metroidvania games.
