Sunday, 51 hours after the horrific triple train accident in Balasore that left 275 people dead and more than 1,000 injured, services resumed. Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw waved at customers and crew members and prayed for their safety as they travelled. The Railways Minister told ANI on Sunday that immediately after Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued orders to that effect, work on rebuilding the damaged rails began.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered suggestions and directives about the rehabilitation of the railway tracks. In order to repair the broken rails and resume service, the entire team (engaged in the restoration work) worked diligently and methodically, he stated. 51 hours after the terrifying accident incident, the railways minister stated that both lines were reconfigured and tested before service was restarted.
“Services have been resumed on both tracks. 51 hours after the disaster, normal train service was reinstated on both lines, according to Ashwini Vaishnaw. At Bahanaga Bazar station in the Balasore neighbourhood, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Coromandel Express, and a cargo train were on three different lines when the triple train catastrophe occurred. Vaishnaw claimed the tragedy was caused by a “change in electronic interlocking” earlier on Sunday.
A system of signal equipment called an electronic interlocking prevents trains from moving in opposition to one another along a network of lines. Essentially, it is a safety mechanism to stop signals from being changed in the wrong order. This system’s goal is to prevent a train from moving forward until the safety of the route has been established.
Earlier in the day, the injured were met at the Srirama Chandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, along with Vaishnaw and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. When it was discovered that some bodies had been counted more than once, Odisha Chief Secy Pradeep Jena explained that the dead toll from the horrible disaster had been revised from 288 to 275.
“275 people have died, not 288 as previously stated. The district magistrate (DM) double-checked the death toll and discovered that some dead had been counted more than once. Since 88 remains have been identified, the death toll been revised to 275, Jena informed ANI. “Of the 1,175 injured, 793 were discharged after treatment,” he continued.
The ministry reported that more than 1000 people, as well as more than 7 Poclain Machines, two accident relief trains, and three to four railway and road cranes, were put to work repairing the damaged lines.
