As the month comes to an end, it’s time to anticipate all the games that will be added to Xbox Game Pass in the upcoming days. May 2023 has a sizable lineup already planned. In May 2023, Xbox Game Pass will release a total of six day-one games, and that is just what has been confirmed thus far. And those six games are all slated to offer dramatically different gaming experiences, from Railway Empire 2’s frontier entrepreneur adventuring to Amnesia: The Bunker’s WW1 horror setting.
But even though each of the May 2023 Xbox Game Pass games has a unique art style, gameplay mechanics, and genre, there are two games that have something in common. Redfall and Farworld Pioneers are both cooperative multiplayer games, and right now a service like Xbox Game Pass needs more of those types of games.
Pioneers like Redfall and Farworld ought to serve as a model for cooperative games on Xbox Game Pass.
Redfall, a long-awaited vampire co-op shooter from Arkane Austin, the same studio that made the 2017 Prey revival, was first mentioned in Xbox’s 2021 Games Showcase. Redfall appears to be shaping up to be a fascinating co-op horror adventure, and its open environment appears to be the star of the show, despite controversy regarding the game’s always-online necessity and its 30FPS constraint on Xbox Series X. Players will explore beachside resorts, suburban homes, churches, retail malls, and a variety of other vampire-infested sites in this game, which is set in the namesake coastal town of Redfall. Players will have the opportunity to create distinctive weapons and spend skill points along the route that will benefit the whole squad as well as themselves.
Farworld Pioneers, a lesser-known game than Redfall, will also be available on Xbox Game Pass in May 2023. This is another co-op adventure that friends may want to keep an eye on. Farworld Pioneers is a 2D side-scrolling crafting survival game in the style of Terraria, but what sets it apart is the fact that it takes place on an alien planet. Players can create their own sci-fi base, enhance it with materials they make, and populate it with rescued survivors. Players in Farworld Pioneers will also be able to build their own ships, enabling them to visit new worlds. Additionally, Farworld Pioneers allows up to 32 players to join one server, whereas Redfall only offers co-op for four players.
Farworld Pioneers and Redfall are two extremely different video games. Farworld Pioneers is a 2D spacecrafting and survival game, whereas Redfall is a horror/action first-person shooter. These two games’ gameplay could not be more dissimilar from one another. However, both games are cooperative and feature extremely ambitious open worlds, making them the ideal selection for Xbox Game Pass.
The co-op genre was obviously developed for Xbox Game Pass. Getting complete buddy groups, as opposed to just one person, to spend money on a co-op game is the largest difficulty it faces. Most of that difficulty is removed by Xbox Game Pass because many friend groups will already be subscribers, increasing the likelihood that everyone will try the co-op game. If Redfall and Farworld Pioneers do well on Xbox Game Pass, it may be the final push Xbox needs to add more expansive co-op titles in the future. It would be good if Game Pass added at least one new co-op title each month.
