The San Francisco 49ers edge rusher Nick Bosa was assessed what appeared to be a questionable roughing-the-passer penalty against Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith on Thursday night, in what is now becoming a weekly occurrence.
It’s challenging to understand what the officials observed during the play to call a foul. Bosa didn’t dive low or jump high. Smith wasn’t needlessly thrown to the ground by him. He didn’t fall fully on top of the quarterback either.
It’s commendable that the NFL wants to keep its quarterbacks healthy. The calls affect games, thus the league needs to find a satisfactory middle ground. The Seahawks’ field goal came as a result of the flag on Bosa, which also eliminated a pick-six by Deommodore Lenoir from the scoreboard.
Despite the increase in debatable calls, NFL executive vice president of football operations, Troy Vincent, defended officials to reporters at this week’s NFL December league meeting, saying they’ve been “very consistent and accurate” before adding, ‘but they are human.”
Vincent also said there would be a “healthy discussion” about whether or not the NFL will allow roughing the passer fouls to be reviewable and if reviews would occur via a coaches’ challenge or league review.
